You may want to have chicken for your consumption or simply as pets. They are really good in cleaning up your garden to get rid of insects and unwanted rubbish. If you are planning on getting some chicken, building a chicken coop is your first step.
You can build with wood, pine or even plywood. Ready made plans for the coop are available. Or you will have to make your own coop plan.
For the chicken it’s a place to rest, nest and snooze. They should feel safe, healthy and good in the coop. They lay eggs, make chicks and play inside. Not just the coop, but the area surrounding the coop also becomes their territory.
The length and width of the coop will depend on the number of chicken. You must allow a generous 5 square feet for each chicken. Then a rough diagram or sketch will be helpful. Select the material and start cutting them into sizes. You can use treated pine or just wood.
How to Construct a Chicken Coop. You will need to make them into pieces, so you can put them all together. You will have to make frames, side rails, ridge, handles, door and perching block. Decide on the number of pieces and size of each part before you start cutting.
You will need to make a support for the perch, nesting perch, nesting boxes and floors. To protect your chicken from rain and sun, buy a good roof underlay. You will have to use screws, nails, hinges and paint. Start putting the pieces together. Mark the points for the frames, back panel, side rail, handle and other parts. Once they are all nailed, cover with chicken wire.
There should be good ventilation and lighting. You can even buy the basic frames and just build the rest. It should also have a place for the water.
Keep in mind to check the local regulations about pets and coops before you get started. Building a chicken coop which your chicken is happy to go to is a challenging task.
